On July 9th the Revd Philip Johnes, Vicar of Llanegwad, was instructed by the Archdeacon of Carmarthen not to hold any more services in Llanegwad Church after July 11th, because of the deterioration of the building.
Philip said at the final service in the church on July 11th 2005:
“All of our professional building advisors have told us that it must be closed until such time as essential repairs have been carried out.
“However, the closure will be very painful for all those who attend the parish church, but I hope you will understand that I could not give any more notice than I did. This was because I felt the officers ought to know and formulate ideas prior to the insisted date of closure.
“I pray that I never have to tell people such sad news again. I was not the only one who had tears in their eyes on that Sunday morning.
“So what of the future? As many of you will know, we were not making great progress with the architect, and so we appointed a new one in June. The practice was not in a position by the beginning of July to come up with fresh ideas and plans of their own and in time to get a faculty in for the early July meeting.
“However, as soon as plans and costings are at hand, we shall be able to move forward. It is therefore my sincere hope that building work will begin in the not too distant future. In the meantime, the pattern of Worship at Llanegwad will continue in Holy Trinity at Llanegwad times. And please remember, whilst we all have our favourite church in which we like to worship, we are the family of God and we share in the worship of God, no matter in which building this takes place.”
